Origin EON17-X PC.
This big rugged laptop pushes the pedal to
the metal with the most powerful hardware available, and then Origin PC
puts things to 11 by overclocking both the full GeForce GTX 1080 and the
Core i7-8700K processor. Yes, this laptop revolutionizes a desktop
processor and not just any desktop processor, it is the fastest
available. With 12 threads and 6 cores, the Origin EON17-X denotes the
CPU reference points. It goes through triple-A games. Hell, I could
crush your skinny thin competition Nvidia Max-Q.
The audacious
Origin gaming laptop not only adopts the “desktop replacement”
classification, but it also loves it. It is a monster in every sense of
the word. Let’s dig deeper.
Origin EON17-X characteristics, specifications and price
The origin EON17-X can be very customized on the Origin PC website.
The basic configuration costs $ 1,935 and includes a quad-core Intel
Core i3-8100, a GeForce GTX 1060 combined with a 120Hz G-Sync,
1920×1080, 8GB of memory and a 500GB Seagate FireCuda hybrid hard drive.
But
you can adjust and update virtually every aspect of the system. (Cue
Burger King’s “Have it your way.”) Do you want a smarter Wi-Fi card, a
fully customized paint job on the lid and lots of storage units? Or a 4K
screen combined with a video capture card to enjoy beautiful Twitch
sequences? Go for it. Origin also offers the quality of life updates
such as factory overclocks, professional screen calibration and improved
thermal paste options.
But you’ll need to spend more to turn this
desktop replacement into a desktop killer. The high-end configuration

Each part of this platform is powerful, but the CPU is the brightest
star in the show. The vast majority of high-end gaming laptops include
Intel’s Core i7-7700HQ, a four-wire, 8-wire mobile chip that can reach
clock speeds of up to 3.8GHz. The origin EON17-X raises the ante with a
desktop Core i7-8700K processor at full power, Intel’s current flagship
product. The chip contains 6 cores and an incredible number of 12
threads, with clock speeds ranging from 3.7 GHz to 4.7 GHz, and then
Origin applied an overclock in addition to that. This system completely
demolishes our package of CPU benchmarks, as you will see later.
The
origin EON17-X chews through modern games, too. The GeForce GTX 1080
desktop class, with overclock, provides more than enough power to handle
the 120Hz, 2560x1440p matte screen at high frame rates. That vibrant
screen is enhanced by smooth G-Sync technology such as Nvidia butter,
which eliminates stuttering and tearing by synchronizing the refresh
rate of the display and the GPU.
The stellar audio, too rare in
laptops, accompanies those gorgeous images. The Origin PC notebook
includes a dedicated subwoofer in its undercarriage. Along with the
Creative Sound Blaster Connect 2 customizable software, the origin
EON17-X had no problem filling my office with a great sound. The games,
the music and the videos were clear, clear and warm. However, you
probably want to hook up a good gaming headset,
because the excellent sounds can be drowned out by the fans of the
laptop during intense gaming sessions, but it is not mandatory.
Origin
loaded our review unit with 16 GB of G.Skill RAM with a clock frequency
of 3,000MHz. However, the configurations on the Origin website exceed
2,800MHz and can increase capacity up to 64GB. However, what we are
testing is more than enough for high-end games and standard desktop
tasks.
Our configuration includes a NVMe Samsung 960 Pro 512 GB SSD as a paired boot unit with a 2TB Seagate
FireCuda hybrid unit. The 960 Pro is one of the fastest SSDs we’ve ever
tested and the origin EON17-X benefits from incredibly fast application
load and boot times. Your media and games are divided into lickity even
if you download them to FireCuda since the hybrid storage solution is a
spacious hard drive along with a small amount of flash storage type SSD
for faster load times in your most used files.

However,
packing such powerful hardware into a laptop and then doing
overclocking is not for the faint of heart or, to be more exact, for the
weak of the arms. The Origin EON17-X is huge, with a thickness of 1.6
inches and 8.6 pounds, to accommodate the pieces and the great cooling
required to tame them.
By removing five small screws from the
larger, heavily ventilated panel at the bottom of the laptop, access to
cooling, NVMe SSD and RAM is guaranteed. Taking two more screws from a
smaller secondary panel reveals the hard drive, and the replaceable
battery opens after sliding a pair of latches. Props to Origin to design
a compatible laptop with replacement.
Many (too many) laptops for
games come dressed in black, with details in red. Our review unit
changes that tradition for an elegant red cover, marked by the circular
black “eye of the hurricane” logo of Origin and a small section of
brushed aluminum in its base. It is damn attractive. However, the
keyboard platform and the bottom of the laptop are made of black
plastic. It looks pretty good, but an option to upgrade to more premium
materials would be welcome, especially if you’re already spending almost
$ 4,000 on a configuration like this. The large loudspeaker grids
incorporated in the base, just below the lid, emit the booming audio
mentioned above.
As with Origin’s smaller origin EVO15-S Max-Q laptop,
the inputs are solid and functional, but not exceptional. The keys of
the keyboard are somewhat soft, but they feel pleasant and comfortable
in general, with a somewhat weak RGB customizable backlight divided into
four zones. Key backlighting would be nice, and given the thickness of
the laptop, I’d love Origin to offer a mechanical keyboard similar to
the Acer Predator Triton 700, but those are small fantasy items. I
worked and played on these keys without complaints. The touchpad is
equally robust and simple, with a fingerprint reader built into its upper left corner.
The
wide selection of ports of this beast meets the name of “desktop
replacement.” You’ll find four USB 3.1 fast A-type ports, a USB 3.1 Gen 2
(10 Gbps) type C, Thunderbolt 3, Ethernet, SD card and lock slots,
HDMI, a couple of Mini-DisplayPort and plenty of audio connectors.
However, the video ports and the power connector sit on the back and can
be uncomfortable to reach without lifting and moving the laptop.
