Certain software programs, especially large ones, are configured as
ISO files. Beyond Windows, applications such as Microsoft Office often
come as ISO file if they are installed over the Internet.
What is an ISO File
An ISO file or iso software
contains all the installation files for a single program. Okay, it’s
fine. But, how do you install an application from your ISO file? Well,
it depends on the Windows version that you are running. In Windows 8.1
or 10, you can mount the ISO file as a virtual drive and install the
software from there. In previous versions of Windows, you must download a
utility that can mount the iso image for you. You can as well burn the ISO file to a CD or DVD and install it from the disk. Let’s review these different methods.
Mount the ISO file in Windows 8.1 or 10
In Windows 8.1 or 10, download the ISO file. Open the File Explorer and right click on file. In the pop-up menu, click on the Mount command.
Virtual unit
That opens a virtual drive from which you can install the software.
In that virtual drive, you must find a setup.exe file or a similar file
to install the program. Double-click on that file to install the
software.
Install
The software is then installed.
Eject
After the installation is complete, close the installation program,
if necessary. Open your “This PC” folder so you can see all your disk
drives. Right-click on the virtual drive. (It is likely that you have a
drive letter of D or E depending on your configuration). In the pop-up
menu, click on the Eject command. That eliminates the virtual drive,
although your ISO file is still alive and well.
Mount the ISO file in Windows 7
The mount command is only available in Windows 8,
8.1 and Windows 10. If you are running Windows 7, you can use a free
virtual drive utility. A good program is Virtual CloneDrive. After
installation, open Windows Explorer and right-click on the ISO file that
you want to install. In the pop-up menu, click on the command “Mount
(Virtual CloneDrive).”
Run the configuration
The
virtual unit is created. A small window appears asking if you want to
run the installation file or open the folder for the virtual drive.
Choose the option to run the installation file.
Disassemble
The
installation continues. After the program has been installed, right
click on the ISO file in Windows Explorer and click “Unmount” in the
pop-up menu to remove the virtual drive.
Burn the ISO file to a disk
Another
option for installing a program from an ISO file is simply to burn the
file to a CD or DVD and install it from there. This is a very useful
method if you want to store the program on a disk
that you can install on any version of Windows. To do this, insert a
blank CD or DVD into the disk drive of your PC. Open-File Explorer or
Windows Explorer. Right-click on the ISO file. In the pop-up menu, click
on the “Record disk image” command.
Install through disk
The Windows Disk Image Burner tool appears and should point to your CD / DVD drive. Click on the Record button to continue.
The
ISO is recorded on your CD or DVD. The disk drive can be opened so you
can extract the disk. Depending on the installation configuration, you
can install the program automatically from the disk by placing it in the
disk drive of a PC or by double-clicking on the configuration file as
shown in the File Explorer or Windows Explorer.
